After completing an engineering course by correspondence in 1939, Joe Toft developed and manufactured the first mechanically driven cane stalk loader using a Model T Ford and other scrap parts. Joe and younger brother Harold joined forces to start Toft Bros., and by 1970 were rivalling Massey Ferguson as the world’s major cane harvester manufacturer. Toft was sold to foreign companies after the sugar price crash of the 1980’s before company executives bought the company back in 1986, renaming it Austoft. However, in 1993 it was once again sold, this time to Case.
