During the mid-1800’s John Fowler was a pioneer for agricultural mechanisation, inventing the steam-driven ploughing engine. His company, John Fowler & Co., built steam tractors, steam rollers, traction engines and Lorries, but merged with Marshall, Sons & Co. in 1947 to form Marshall-Fowler Ltd. In 1975 British Leyland acquired the company. The Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club has several preserved Fowler Traction Engines and Steam Rollers in operating condition and are regularly demonstrated to the public.
