Volvo

Founded in 1927, Volvo means ‘I roll’ in Latin, a name originally intended for the company’s ball bearing division over a decade earlier. Volvos have always been associated with safety, with founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson stating “Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety”. The Swedish car manufacturer actually invented the seatbelt, and deliberately didn’t patent the idea because management felt worldwide driver safety was more important than financial reward. In 1999 Volvo was sold to Ford for US$6.45 billion, but in 2010 became the property of the Chinese company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group for just US$1.8 billion.
