The only major Spanish car manufacturer with the infrastructure to develop its own cars, SEAT is now owned by the Volkswagen Group. Founded in 1950, the Spanish population had 3.1 cars per 1000 people, hence the need for cars to be made available to its citizens. By 1974 SEAT was the eighth biggest European manufacturer, selling its two millionth car. The SEAT Ibiza was launched in 1984, a combination of Italian design and German engineering, it has gone on to become the most recognisable model throughout the company’s history, selling 4.5 million by 2010. By 1990 Volkswagen owned 99.99% of the company, and in 2002 joined the Audi Brand Group, with Audi and Lamborghini, under the newly formed Volkswagen Group.
