Saab evolved from its initial incarnation as an aircraft manufacturer, revealing their first car in 1947 in the staff canteen at their Linkoping aircraft base in Sweden. Because an enormous amount of surplus green paint was available at the end of World War II, if you wanted a Saab, it came in one colour until 1952. The Saab 900 is the best selling model of all time, selling 908,817 units between 1978 and 1993. In 1989 General Motors purchased 50% of the company, before acquiring the other 50% in 2000. It is now owned by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) after purchasing the bankrupt estate from Spyker Cars N.V.
