Porsche’s first official car was the 356 model built in 1948, before which time the company offered motor vehicle development and consulting services. One of their first contracts was for the German government to produce a car for the people. Ferdinand Porsche went to work designing the Volkswagen Beetle, which partly inspired the first Porsche motor vehicles. The most famous Porsche is the 911. Originally it was to be called the 901, but Peugeot already owned the rights to this name and took them to court. The current range includes the Boxter, 911 and controversial SUV Cayenne, with the company claiming the highest profit margin per car sold in the world. Porsche has been in Australia for 62 years, selling 27,000 vehicles in that time.
