Kia

Based in South Korea, Kia is the country’s second biggest car manufacturer with 2.75 million sales in 2013, behind Hyundai who happen to own 33% of the company. Founded in 1944 making steel tubing and bicycle parts by hand, Kia didn’t manufacture its first car until 1974. After military dictatorship halted car production for five years, Kia partnered with Ford in 1986, producing Mazda-based cars for sales in South Korea, and exporting to other countries including Australia rebadged as the Ford Festiva and Ford Aspire. Kia declared bankruptcy in 1997, and Hyundai outbid Ford to take a controlling 51% stake, which has since diminished due to diversification.
