AM General started making Humvees (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles – HMMWV) for the U.S Army in 1983, before producing H1 models for the general public in 1992, called Hummers. General Motors bought the exclusive rights in 1999, and built the H2, then H3 models. Their popularity grew in the early 1990’s when Arnold Schwarzenegger requested a Hummer from AMG with a Corvette V8 engine. Because the Hummer requires a lot of energy to run, which is out of fashion in these environmentally aware times, GM announced it would discontinue production in 2010, with the last H3 rolling off the assembly line in May, of that year.
