Fiat

During the early years of Fiat, the company built cars, trucks, airplane engines, railway engines, tractors and aircraft. Within 11 years of foundation in 1899 Fiat was the biggest car manufacturer in Italy and is still number one to this day. Owning a Fiat in the U.S in the early 1900’s was a sign of wealth, with a 1905 model worth $4,000, compared to a Model T Ford valued at $525. By 1970 Fiat employed over 100,000 people in Italy alone, and by the end of 2012 employed almost 215,000 worldwide. Since forming an alliance with Chrysler, the Fiat Group now owns many of the world’s prominent automobile brands such as Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and the Chrysler Group.
