Although it has ventured into various categories such as small cars and sports cars, it was mainly known for its prestige luxury vehicles. It had a Royal Warrant to provide cars to the British Royal Family until replaced by Rolls-Royce in the 1950’s. Other Royal Families also used Daimlers such as those from Germany, Russia, Sweden, Japan, Spain and Greece. Daimler was owned by Jaguar Cars (twice) and British Leyland from 1960, before being sold to the Ford Motor Company in 1989 for £1.6 billion. The Daimler name was discontinued on Jaguar cars from 2007, although it was only ever used on the Super Eight model anyway. The following year Jaguar and the naming rights to Daimler were sold to India’s Tata Motors. However, the Daimler name hasn’t been used since.
