Plumbing inventor David Dunbar Buick founded the Buick Motor Company in 1903. In 1908, Buick boss Billy Durant attempted a merger with Henry Ford. When that failed he left to start General Motors with Buick joining Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Oakland (later to become Pontiac) in the GM family. The 1963 Riviera is considered one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and was inspired from design boss Bill Mitchell watching a Rolls-Royce through the London fog. The halcyon days of the 70’s and 80’s saw the production of the Century and Electra, and reintroduce the convertible to the American market with the soft-top Riviera. More than 43 million Buicks have been built, with the one millionth rolling off the production line in 1923.
