Founded by the German August Horsch, the name Audi comes from the Latin word ‘audi’, which means ‘listen’, the equivalent of ‘horsch’ in German. Owned by the Volkswagon Group since 1966, Audi joins fellow German manufacturers BMW and Mercedes-Benz as the three biggest luxury automakers in the world. In 1938, Audi inadvertently set the car manufacturer world on the road to current safety standards by carrying out the first crash tests to see how the car would behave when involved in an accident. The prestigious Audi R8, used in the Iron Man movies, has only 120 of the company’s best employees on the assembly line, and has over 5,000 parts that are almost all fitted by hand.
